Fall Thoughts

It certainly is sad when Summer ends, but I do have a fondness for fall. There is a sense of excitement that I always feel around this time; perhaps it is left over from childhood, and the mix of trepidation and enthusiasm about the start of the new school year. There is also the joy of the switch from the dampness of summer to the crispness of autumn, the changing of the leaves, that sharp smell of distant burning filling your nostrils, the mysteriousness of the long nights. Everything seems more sharply defined in September and October, even the moon seems to change, from being in soft focus to a perfect and freshly carved disc. It is as though, in the fall we put our glasses back on and really start to see the edges of things again. There are Halloween costumes to dream-up, and MY BIRTHDAY to think about, pumpkins to carve, and caramel apples to eat. There was a time when fall meant corduroys and clogs, new pens and pencils, maybe a rad new backpack, one week of organization and color coordinated post-it notes. Now it means switching from a glass of white to a glass of red, fashion week, tights, and sleeping fully tucked away under the covers.
